The utilitarian benefits of building the Caltex plant in 1977 was non more important than the violations of moral rights, the rights that human bes of every nationality cause to and equal extent simply by virtue of being human beings (Velasquez, 2006 p.74). The jobs that were usable in the Caltex plant would of help feed, house, and clothe many blacks in Africa but being there only strengthen Apartheid in South Africa. The system of apartheid was enforced by a serial of laws passed in the 1950s: the Group Areas Act of 1950 assigned races to unlike residential and business sections in urban areas, and the Land Acts of 1954 and 1955 dependent nonwhite residence to specific areas. These laws further restricted the already especial(a) right of black Africans to own land, entrenching the white minoritys control of over 80 percent of South African land.
In addition, other laws prohibited most social contacts between the races; enforced the requisition of public facilities and the separation of educational standards; created race-specific job categories; restricted the powers of nonwhite unions; and curbed nonwhite company in government (cited in webmaster 2011).
The stockholders in Texaco had the opportunity to ballot on three resolutions that was proposed. I would have voted in favor of all three stockholder resolutions. The first was asking Caltex to halt its operations, the second asking Caltex not to sell to the military or police of South Africa, and the last asking Caltex to implement the tutu principles.
